Leadership Scholars Program
A proud leadership scholar at Ithaca College.
What does this mean?
Leadership Scholars are chosen based on applications that they submit their senior year of high school. About 10% of applicants get chosen to be a member of the scholarship program. In this, we are required to be involved in at least one student organization, attend three leadership development seminars, and participate in a community service project each semester. It may sound like a lot of responsibilities, but they are all things that I would do regardless of whether or not I was chosen as a Leadership Scholar!

Leadership Goals:
2017-2018:
Involvement Goal: Create a positive organization climate in both IABC and After Dark through training programs. Reach out to everyone and build connections with each board member.
Community Service Goal: Use skills I have acquired through college to better the community, outside of just my student organizations.
Leadership Development Goal: Present at an OSEMA conference in efforts of connecting with future leaders and sharing what I've learned.
2016-2017:
Work my way up to become the executive chair for IC After Dark by showing my interest and working hard as the Event Planner/ Finance Liaison
End of the year reflection: In the fall, I showed my dedication and commitment to the organization and was chosen to be the Vice Executive of Marketing for the Spring. I worked really hard in the Spring semester to prove that I could be the Executive Chair for the 2017-2018 year. In the end, the outgoing seniors chose Matt, the first boy Exec of After Dark, and I was give the choice of any other position on the board. I have chosen to be the Vice Executive of Finance. Even though that terrifies me, I'm also really excited to learn new skills and work with Matt to make After Dark and this campus the best it can be.
2015-2016:
My goals for this year here at Ithaca are to get a swimming club up and running, to acquire a (hopefully, paid) summer internship, to become a certified guiding eyes for the blind puppy sitter, and to make dean's list. The goal that I elaborated on, although not the most important for my future, was to get the swim club up and running. It is meaningful to me because I feel that swimming acts as an outlet for many students to stay healthy and to de stress. Swimming is a recreational activity, but is often more fun with your friends. By starting a swim club, I intend to create a group of people that like to exercise together a few times a week and that can make lasting friendships. I hope to prove that you do not need the commitment of a varsity college sport to remain active and healthy. The resources that I need to ensure that this is manageable is a strong group of executives that want to see this project take off, interested swimmers, decent pool times, and a great advisor. I will measure the success of this project based on attendance at practices, team morale, and whether or not OSEMA recognizes us as an official group by the end of the semester or year.
Swimming is important to me because it is a good source of exercise, a stress reliever, and a perfect place to make friends. I believe that, at Ithaca, a swim club should exist. Although there is a swim team, not everything should be competition oriented and require such a time commitment. College is a time to try new things and venture out of your comfort zone. If you have swim practice every single day for three hours, those new opportunities are very limited. I seek to create a group of students who feel like a team without that underlying competition aspect. I aim to create a club that meets about four or five hours a week so that students can get exercise, relieve stress, and make friends while still experiencing other college opportunities.
So far, I have organized meetings with those interested in being executives. We sat down and discussed what we were looking for in the club. We also assigned/ voted on executive positions in hopes of moving along the process. I was named founder along with being named a captain. Captain is suiting because I hold a WSI certification and hope to help swimmers who do not know all of the strokes. I will get to work with all of the swimmers and design sets for people to complete at practices.
By the end of the fall semester, I hope to see practices being held twice a week and a number of swimmers coming to each one!
End of the year reflection: This year, I started a swim club. I founded it with four other students and started holding practices. The students coming decided to move on with competitions and travel. Unfortunately, I do not have time in my schedule for the level of commitment others seek, but I'm glad that I was able to build the platform for this club!!
